Ban Phu or mountain village is situated on a hill surrounded by lush, green mountains. Ancestors of Ban Phu’s people migrated from Kham Or Khiao and Wang towns on the east side of the Mekong River in Laos to its current location in 1844, during the reign of King Rama III of Bangkok. In 1974, representatives of the community visited the King’s palace. They toured the palace and experienced farming projects initiated by the late king and when returned home, they applied the philosophy of the King to their way of life. Every family now grows herbs, vegetables and fruit around their homes. They are well-known for organic dying and weaving of cotton. Most of the raised houses in the village have a wooden loom under them. Women of Ban Phu have traditional belief that they must be able to weave clothes, otherwise they wouldn't have a chance to get married.
